AGB stars and the chemical evolution of galaxies
نویسنده
چکیده
Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars are important players in the chemical evolution modelling of galaxies, because they are major producers of several chemical elements and excellent tracers of the structure and of the star formation activity of their parent galaxies. A few examples on the importance of AGB stars are presented in this review, together with a number of open problems affecting chemical evolution model predictions related to the element enrichment by AGB stars: the evolution of He and Na in globular clusters, the evolution of He and the carbon isotopes in the Galactic disk, and the evolution of N and O in different types of galaxies. The need of homogeneous and complete sets of yields is emphasized.

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I
We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...
متن کاملN/O-trends in Late-Type Galaxies: AGB-stars, IMFs, Abundance Gradients and the Origin of Nitrogen
Models of galactic chemical evolution (CEMs) show that the shape of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) and other assumptions regarding star formation affect the resultant abundance gradients in models of late-type galaxies. Furthermore, intermediate mass (IM) stars undeniably play an important role in the buildup of nitrogen abundances in galaxies. Here I specifically discuss the nitrogen ...
متن کاملCarbon Stars and Nucleosynthesis in Galaxies
The role of carbon stars in the build-up of chemical elements in galaxies is discussed on the basis of stellar evolution calculations and estimated stellar yields, abundance analyses of AGB stars, galactic-evolution models and abundance trends among solar-type disk stars. We conclude that the AGB stars in general, and carbon stars in particular, probably are main contributors of s-elements, tha...
متن کاملRevealing infrared populations of nearby galaxies using the Spitzer Space Telescope
Due to their brightness in infrared, asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are in important evolutionary stage to be understood at this wavelength. In particular, in next decades, when the infrared optimised telescopes, such as the JWST and the ELT are in operation, it will be essential to include the AGB phase more precisely into the population synthesis models. However, the AGB phase is still o...
متن کاملYields from AGB Stars and their Impact on the Chemical Evolution of Dwarf Galaxies
By means of 2–D chemodynamical simulations, we study the evolution of dwarf galaxies with structural parameters similar to IZw18 and to tidal dwarf galaxies. Different sets of yields from intermediate-mass stars are tested, in order to discover which one best reproduces the observed chemical compositions (in particular for nitrogen). Different choices of yields from intermediate-mass stars lead...
